Casually enjoying a classical music concert at special locations in the heart of Leeuwarden. It’s possible at CityProms, the largest classical music festival in the north of the Netherlands. The festival takes place from 27thuntil the 30thof June and is completely free to attend. There will be a range of international, Dutch and Frisian classical stars and also a fantastic children’s programme with live classical music.

Opening concert Friday evening 28th of June
On Friday the 28th of June, the festival will be opened by the North Netherlands Orchestra, led by conductor Damian Iorio, and cellist Irene Kok. They will play the first cello concerto by Dmitri Shostakovich. They will also play a compilation from the world renowned Nutcracker Suite. After that the Concertgebouw Jazz Orchestra will take over with ZO! Gospel Choir and create a party with their swinging jazz and gospel songs on the Wilhelminaplein square in front of the Frisian Museum.
A whole weekend of classical delight!
This whole weekend, Leeuwarden will be filled with beautiful classical music, including: Camerata RCO, with members of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Matangi Quartet, pianist Ketevan Sharumashvili, the Youth Orchestra Festival, Inclusive Music Theatre ANDERS!, a special children’s programme with live classical music and so much more! Children’s programme with live classical music
Like previous years, we have a special programme with live classical music for children aged 1 until 14. The North Netherlands Orchestra, in collaboration with “Het Houten Huis”, will play a theatrical concert called “Gevleugeld” meaning ‘winged’. It is one of many exciting children’s performances this weekend. Additionally, children will be able to make instruments from garbage that you’d usually throw away, with Jordano Piloto! Or they can go searching for sounds with Christiaan van der Weij. Plenty of things to discover for people of all ages!
